Regent Eberhard von der Tann, a friend of Martin Luther, introduced the Reformation in Tann in the 1530s. Consequently, a new Protestant town church was built in 1569. On May 12, 1879, this small, now baroque church fell victim to the great city fire, making a new building necessary. From 1886 to 1889, today's city church was built in the same location in the neo-Gothic style. The architect was master architect Carl Weise from Eisenach.
The church is a cruciform, three-aisled complex with galleries and an impressive chancel. It offers space for 1200 people and is used repeatedly as a concert room due to its excellent acoustics.
A masterpiece of Rhön carving is the life-size crucifix in the sanctuary, which comes from the workshop of the Tanner wood sculptor Kieser. The artistically designed Gothic windows are also impressive.
At 72 meters, the tower of the Tanner town church is seven meters higher than the Fulda cathedral and has now become a symbol of the Ulstertal.
