For almost hundred years the fearless life-savers based at this station helped the sailors that got in trouble around these treacherous waters. Now it's the last remaining lifeboat rail going into the water in California, and a well-restored station. A growing colony of elephant seals breeds on the beach, offering one of the best opportunities to come very close within arm's reach to these interesting marine mammals, protected by the terrace fence.
