The Schorte originates on the eastern slope of the Pferdeberg near Stützerbach and forms the Knöpfelstaler pond in its upper part, a reservoir built in the 17th century for rafting wood, and after 8.56 km it flows into the Ilm at the Grenzhammer, a district of Ilmenau.
