Until about 1840 there was a large yard called Holzheu near the current Elderschachenhütte with extensive agricultural areas, where today the Ostallgäu part of the Holzerwald is. The border along the upper edge of the slope to the Günztal is marked with a ditch, which you can usually still see well. There are also many large old landmarks from the time after the area was reforested as the "Royal Forest" by the Bavarian state.
