This geological natural monument was protected by decree of the Meiningen district administrator on October 30, 1940. In the area surrounding Meiningen, for example, at Hexenberg, the Panoramaweg, or in Dreißigacker, the layers of the Lower Muschelkalk lie almost horizontally. A special feature of the bedding of the Lower Muschelkalk can be seen in the Joachimstal valley.
The layers are folded or bent. This folding was caused by movements of the Earth's crust about 50 million years ago. The knobby, flaky, and platy mercury limestones of the Lower Muschelkalk appear to the observer as a bent layered structure.
The folding occurred in the so-called Hercynian fault zones running northwest to southeast. J. L. Heim, a pioneer of Thuringian geology, visited this natural monument and mentioned it in 1806 in his "Geological Description of the Thuringian Forest Mountains."
The geological outcrop deserves attention, especially because it has been a subject of geological research for almost 200 years.
