Best Hikes to Gypsum ponds

Tips

  • That between Bereldingen and the Kléngelbach valley
exploited gypsum rock was very productive and of
especially white color. It was partly in galleries under the
"Plakegebierg", partly won in the opencast mine. The transport
to the processing plant before the gypsum ponds
by lorries or horse carts. The Lorengleise were open
the dam over which the path now leads. The hills
in this area consist of heaped up soil from
    Gypsum mining (today's pine forest).
The gypsum ponds served as water reserves since the
Kléngelbach did not have enough fertility,
to be able to drive a mill wheel continuously.
There was a larger hall below the first pond
thick stone walls, with massive oak beams. Here
there were two ovens in which the plaster was burned,
    and an associated grinder.
After a mining accident on Schober Monday 1907,
where to mourn one dead and several seriously injured
    gypsum mining was stopped underground.
The entire company was shut down over time, and
through more modern facilities in Heisdorf and Walferdange
    replaced.
    after Jeannot Theisen (1998)
