The castle was built between 1708 and 1718. At the same place - so it is assumed - there was already an old castle, alternatively a large, fortified courtyard that belonged to the Teutonic Order. This was present in Karben from 1269. The castle and the courtyard appeared for the first time in a document in 1409. The former moats that run around the property still exist from this time

Since the ownership of the order was abolished during the secularization, the palace came to the Grand Duchy of Hesse in 1809, which two years later sold it to the Counts of Walderdorff. Between 1929 and 1960 it belonged to the State of Hesse, then it was privately sold again. In the 1980s, the owners completely restored the castle.
