At the end of the 19th century, Dachau became a destination for landscape painters. These had a great influence on the life of Dachau, cultivated and handed down the customs of the region and sought to preserve the beauties of architecture and nature.
By 1900 Dachau had grown into a nationally known center for landscape painting. The Dachau artists' colony became widely known. Three artists in particular contributed to this: Adolf Hölzel, Ludwig Dill and Arthur Langhammer.
