The grass castle in the old Stolberg forest area between Stempeda and Rottleberode in the southern Harz is, according to legend, the ancestral castle of the Counts of Stolberg. There are various theories about the ancestry of the Counts of Stolberg, but none of them could finally prevail.
This grass castle was inhabited from the 10th to the 12th centuries. In the 13th century, a pilgrimage chapel was built on the castle grounds, in which the church consecration was celebrated every year until the 15th century [1]. The chapel then fell into ruins, several parts of which have survived to this day. A gable wall with a broken choir opening and parts of the choir and ship walls have been preserved. An arched window can still be seen in the south wall of the choir.
