Well, you can reach Piane by car. The best thing is to continue on foot at least to Ventolaro, about 1600m, but even more to Massa del Turlo, 1960m, from where the mountains, on a clear day, appear spectacular, and you can see part of Lake Orta. Done in every season, but in winter with snow (as long as it doesn't exceed 50cm at the end, to avoid suffering too much, better with good snowshoes) landscapes and photogenicity reach very high levels.
