The Hengsen-Opherdicke military training area is a large area located between the towns of Hengsen and Opherdicke near Schwerte in the Unna district of North Rhine-Westphalia. The area was originally used as a military training area, but today it is an interesting area that is partially open to the public and particularly attracts nature lovers and hikers.
The site of the former military training area includes a varied landscape of meadows, woodland, streams and open spaces, which is ideal for hikes, walks and nature exploration. Due to its previous use as a military training area, a unique flora and fauna has developed here. Many rare plant species and protected animal species find a habitat in this varied landscape. Bird lovers in particular get their money's worth here, as the area is an important refuge for various bird species.
Part of the area is still used by the Bundeswehr today, and therefore not all areas are always freely accessible. It is important to pay attention to the signs and stay on the designated paths. However, these paths are well signposted and offer a nice way to explore the area. Hikers will find quiet, natural routes that lead through the varied landscape and offer repeated views of the surrounding area.
A special attraction near the training area is Haus Opherdicke, a moated castle from the 17th century that is now used as a cultural and event center. The castle is only a few kilometers from the training area and, in addition to impressive architecture, also regularly offers exhibitions, concerts and cultural events. The castle park is also worth seeing and invites you to take a stroll.
The Hengsen-Opherdicke training area is also an important part of the regional biotope network and serves to connect habitats for many animal and plant species. The area is therefore not only an interesting place for people to relax and spend their free time, but also plays an important role in nature conservation.
