From the church you have a wonderful view of Lake Wörthersee, the Pyramidenkogel and the peaks of the Karawanken.

The church dedicated to Saint George was a private church of the Counts of Sternberg between 1170 and 1180. In 1285 it was named as a parish church. In 1311 the church and Sternberg Castle passed to the sovereign. In 1329 it was owned by the Counts of Ortenburg and in 1418 by the Counts of Cilli. In 1457 the church was damaged in the fight for the Cillier inheritance. It belongs to the Diocese of Gurk within the Deanery of Rosegg.

The current parish church was built in the Gothic style of the 15th century, parts from the Romanesque period have been preserved. The church stands in a formerly fortified cemetery. In the north-east corner there is a square cemetery chapel, probably early Baroque, with a steep pyramidal roof and arrow slits.

The town church of St. Maria and St. Nikolaus was built between 1309 and 1322 in Sternberg near the market in Mecklenburg. Since then it has been the main church of Sternberg in the parish of Sternberg, a small town between Schwerin and Güstrow in present-day Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. It belongs to the church region of Sternberg in the Propstei Wismar in the Mecklenburg church district of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Northern Germany.
