Large areas of the Rur and the Rur valley up to Linnich are designated as nature reserves. These are the Upper Rur Valley with the rock formations of the Ehrensteinley, the Middle Rur Valley with the rock formations of the Perdsley and Wiselsley, the Rur Valley with the rock formations of the Uhusley, Buntsandsteinfelsen in the Rurtal between Heimbach and Kreuzau, Rur in Jülich, the Rur meander between Floßdorf and Broich, Buntsandsteinfelsen Blens and Rurtal from Abenden to where the Rur flows into the Obermaubach reservoir. Some of these areas are also designated as fauna-flora-habitat areas. There are problems with red sandstone rocks used as climbing rocks in the Rur valley or in side valleys, where the habitat in the entry area of climbing routes or through "sweeping out" loose debris or rock vegetation is degraded or lost. In particular, the occurrence of the wall lizard is being disturbed and egg-laying sites at the foothills of the fields are being destroyed.
