    Totally unexpected forest ruin

The core castle today only consists of a relatively small plateau. On the inside of the shield wall, passages can be found that can not be entered. Two large openings and loopholes indicate that you could fight your opponent through the wall without being hit by bullets of any kind. In the wall are still old battlements to see. Probably the shield wall took over the meaning of the missing donjon. If the enemy had invaded, they could retreat into the wall and their corridors. The high location and poor accessibility made it a hard-to-reach place.

Except the shield wall, only the well-preserved south wall is preserved. At this was once the Palas, of which still some windows and double windows are preserved, which were partially reconstructed. A door dressing the palace probably with a kennel in the south. On the valley side of the core castle are still foundations that belonged to the former ring wall.

From the tourist point of view, Burg Alt-Lichtenfels is very pleasant. The castle is rarely visited and relatively unknown. Although there is not much to discover, the complex with its two high walls is very interesting and impressive.

      story

Lichtenfels Castle was built in the years between 1250 and 1275. First documented mention was 1296. It was destroyed at the Battle of Leinstetten in 1298, but rebuilt. In 1423, the castle is owned by the counts of Zollern. In the 15th century, Countess Henriette von Württemberg besieged the castle. Subsequently, Lichtenfels was not rebuilt and abandoned due to Schloss Leinstetten. Probably one used the stones of the castle to build the castle, which would explain the partial total destruction.

The ruin Alt-Lichtenfels lies above one of the narrowest points of the Glatt valley and secured it probably. The shield wall and outgoing parts of the outer ring wall are preserved. It is surrounded by a neck trench to the mountain, which pulls once around the entire castle complex and is replaced only by the east side by the steeply sloping slope. A small wall on the southeast side indicates the presence of a barrier in the neck trench. It was apparently still a kennel in front of the wall, which can be seen from a plateau to the valley. Old Lichtenfels probably benefited from customs revenue collected at the narrow point of Glatt Valley, 50m below the castle. An outgoing wall towards the valley indicates that there may have been a connection to the valley.

The southern outer wall of the castle is part of the palace. You can see a passage and several windows, as well as weathered decorations. The western side of the castle is dominated by the high shield wall, which has two loopholes and an inner battlement among other things. With its small humpback cubes and the height, it provides an eye-catcher, which is reinforced by the present neck trench. At the northwest corner, so left of the shield wall was the entrance to the castle. The gate is no longer existent today. At the front of the shield wall can still be seen the remains of a Toranbaus or an outgoing defensive wall with gate.
