Very nice little town on the Ahr.
Above are the ruins of Are Castle on a rocky outcrop.
    Very nice!
The area around Altenahr was already inhabited in Frankish times. The town of Altenahr only came into existence following the construction of Are Castle by Count Theodoric I of Are around 1100.
In 1246 Friedrich von Are-Hochstaden, provost of Xanten, with the consent of his brother Konrad, archbishop of Cologne, gave the castle and county of Are to the archbishopric of Cologne. The county became the Kurkölnisches office with the castle as the center.
In connection with Are Castle, the Altenahr valley had a fortification with three gates, of which the last gate, the "Brückenpforte", was torn away by the Ahr flood in 1804.

The Romanesque parish church from the 12th century was first mentioned in 1166. It was founded by the Counts of Are and their ministerials. The Gothic chancel was added in 1326 and the naves were vaulted in the 15th century.
In 1834 the Ahr valley road between Ahrweiler and Altenahr was completed. The first road tunnel in Prussia is built in Altenahr. Tourism begins.

      Very beautiful city.

Altenahr was often affected by flooding. In particular, the flooding of the Ahr on July 21, 1804 and the flooding of the Ahr on June 13, 1910 caused great damage.

On June 2, 2016, the Ahr reached a level of 371 cm at the Altenahr gauge.

In July 2021, the Bernd storm caused continuous and heavy rain in the Ahrweiler district, causing the Ahr to rise sharply. Several districts were devastated by the floods. The water level rose quickly from around 100 cm at noon on July 14, 2021 to 575 cm in the evening - then the water gauge failed.
