The Thuringian Forest Biosphere Reserve is a UNESCO biosphere reserve in Thuringia between the cities of Suhl, Ilmenau and Schleusingen.

It covers an area of 337 km², which is mainly composed of forests, mountain meadows, but also of raised bogs.

The area is completely enclosed by the Thuringian Forest Nature Park.

The first areas of today's biosphere reserve were declared a nature reserve as early as 1939.

In 1979 it was declared the first biosphere reserve in Germany under the name of the Vessertal Biosphere Reserve with an area of 1,384 ha.

From 2006 to 2016, the area was called the Vessertal-Thuringian Forest Biosphere Reserve.

In 2016 it was renamed the "Thuringian Forest Biosphere Reserve" and expanded to its current size.

The biosphere reserve also includes the historic mining area of Suhl.
