There are several mountains named Meall Buidhe in Scotland, with two being Munros, so don’t get confused if you thought you’d already ticked one off. Hikes up this Meall Buidhe place you in the Knoydart Peninsula, north of Loch Nevis and amongst splendid, wild landscape.

With a summit at 3,104 feet (946 m), and a significant walk-in no matter where you begin, Meall Buidhe is a challenging and remote Munro. Inverie, a common starting point, lies at 30 feet (10 m) above sea level, so you’ll be hiking the entire, behemoth elevation of this beautiful peak. Due to this, it’s advisable to leave children and dogs at home.

Wild adventures in the phenomenal Knoydart Peninsula

The best starting points for hiking up Meall Buidhe are either Inverie, where you’ll find various accommodation, or the Sourlies bothy to the south. There is another bothy, Druim, on the walk-in from Inverie but it’s private and must be rented.

Hiking from Inverie, Meall Buidhe is reached by ascending the challenging, craggy bulk of Druim Righeanaich. Pathless and a blanket of bracken in summer, gaining the ridge here takes some doing. Alternatively, continue along the glen and ascend at the end, which is also where the trails from Sourlies bothy will bring you.

Exceptionally rocky and rugged, hiking here is best achieved in good weather with plenty of light on your side. Your efforts are well rewarded though, with exquisite summit views across Scotland’s fantastic western islands. Changeable weather is rife, so watch the skies and don’t be afraid of turning back. Winter can bring extreme weather, only suitable for experienced winter mountaineers.

Tips

  • Meall Buidhe is a 946m Munro mountain in the Scottish Highlands. I climbed up from Sourlies bothy early one morning in October 2019 to start an epic 40km day of hiking over the three most westerly Munros of the Knoydart area. It's most definitely one of my favourite areas to hike in peace in all of Scotland.
