There is no shortage of castles in the Ahr valley. Even if sometimes only the ruins are left. As here: The castle Are was finally blown up in 1714 by the Elector Joseph Clemens of Bavaria and if the remains had not been extensively renovated and placed under monument protection, probably not much of it would be left today. In any case, worth the small, exhausting trip to the 240-meter-high hill on which the ruin stands. Because from here you have a really great view of Altenahr.
