Wiesthal is an old glassmaking town and was first mentioned in a document in 1057. The Aubach river used to separate the town into two parts, which belonged to the diocese of Mainz and the county of Rieneck. After the Counts of Rieneck died out, this part of the town also fell to the Archbishopric of Mainz. The office of the archbishopric of Mainz was secularized in 1803 in favor of the prince primate of Dalberg and fell with his principality of Aschaffenburg in 1814 (as a department of the grand duchy of Frankfurt) to Bavaria.
