Càrn Gorm is one of a quartet of Munros – the Càrn Mairg group – that are often bagged together as part of a grand horseshoe above Glen Lyon. These are fine, heather-clad, flat-topped mountains that reward with stirring views of the Southern Highlands. In winter conditions, their terrain is equally suited to those exploring with skis as those wearing hiking boots.
The range rises just to the north of the popular Ben Lawers group and there’s plenty of accommodation scattered amongst the glens. In terms of amenities, the market town of Aberfeldy is a good option.
A grand Munro on the spectacular Glen Lyon Horseshoe
The usual approach to Càrn Gorm is from Inverar and ascends through woodland onto the mountain’s broad flanks. The going is relatively straightforward, making this a good expedition for adventurous children.
From Càrn Gorm’s southeast ridge are awe-inspiring views towards the towering Ben Lawers, the highest mountain in the Southern Highlands. From Càrn Gorm’s summit and its north ridge, you can enjoy a vast panorama including a fine prospect down the barrel of Glen Lyon, north to Loch Rannoch and east to nearby Schiehallion’s charismatic form. The ridge descends and arcs around to the subsidiary peak of An Sgòrr, before continuing to Meall Garbh, the next Munro on the round. Of course, the whole Horseshoe can be done in reverse, taking in Càrn Gorm towards the end of the day.
To the west rises the Corbett of Beinn Dearg, which can be linked to Cárn Gorm as an alternative to the usual Horseshoe. There are plenty of possible approaches from Loch Rannoch too, though these are longer and less well-trodden.
Càrn Gorm is a 3,376-foot (1,029 m) Munro in the Scottish Highlands. It's part of a wonderful circular route of four Munros from Glen Lyon. It provides a beautiful viewpoint across to the Ben Lawers range.
