Unlike the short section of lava tube at Volcanoes National Park, these caves are not lit up so you must bring a good flashlight! Cell phone lights will illuminate a bit, but not enough. It is pitch black inside. We used our bright Brompton headlights to see where we were going and see the beautiful, diverse lava formations in the cave. (Check out our blog for more photos - bromptoning.com/traveling-adventures/hawaii-hilos-waterfalls-caves-loop/)

There's no official bike parking here (the car park is across the road), so we locked our bikes to the metal railing leading to the stairs down to the caves. At the bottom of the stairs, you can go left or right. The BEST caves for variety are to the left. You have to go through a narrow section, but then it opens up into a big cavernous cave. The caves to the right have interesting lava formations in the first 300 metres, but then these caves get very rough and rocky and hard to walk in. Definitely wear hiking shoes! And be careful if you're prone to spraining your ankles.

Admission to the caves is FREE!

There are not too many free things in Hawaii, plus this is amazing lava tube.
Very important to bring good lights and spare batteries.
We went exploring cave and lost one light deep inside. On our way back we lost the other one.
Thrust me, not fun being in pitch dark without any light.
We were touching the sides of the cave and stumbled our way out.
The scariest thing in my life!
      Otherwise stunning place.
      Enjoy and respect
