This protective chapel was built by the Raes family in 1914 in honor of Mary. That is why the chapel is called the "Raes chapel" or "Chapel of Our Lady of Assebrouck".
There were two reasons why this chapel was built. First, in the 19th century there was a rivalry between the prominent families Raes and Govaert. The success of the pilgrimage chapel of the Govaert family was a thorn in their side. On the other hand, they wanted to achieve a safe return of the Oedelem soldiers in the First World War.
