    Gråsten Castle:

The castle is so well-known because the right of use was transferred in 1935 to the then crown prince Frederik and Crown Princess Ingrid. After the death of Queen Ingrid in 2000, the castle is inhabited by Queen Margrethe and Prince Henrik for about 3 weeks during the summer months. Only the castle gardens and the church are open to the public if the royal family does not live at Gråsten Castle.

    Changing of the guard:

Parades and changing of the guard are events that take place whenever the royal family visits. The guard marches from the palace to Ahlefeldvej 4, where the guardsmen set up at about 11.30 clock. From here they march through Gråsten accompanied by flutes and drums to the castle where the changing of the guard takes place at 12 o'clock. On Fridays you can enjoy a concert in the castle courtyard after the changing of the guard.

Gråsten Castle is particularly known as the summer residence of the royal family.

The castle was originally built as a hunting lodge in the mid-16th century. After it burned down in 1603, a new castle was built, most likely located where the south wing of the present castle stands. Around 1700, Grand Chancellor Frederik Ahlefeldt had a massive Baroque castle built, which burned down in 1757, leaving only the castle church intact.

The current castle building was constructed in two stages: the south wing in 1759

and the main building in 1842.

In 1935, the right of use was transferred to the then Crown Prince Frederik and Crown Princess Ingrid. Queen Ingrid had a great interest in flowers and was instrumental in planning the palace gardens until her death in 2000.

The palace buildings and rooms are not open to the public, with the exception of the palace church, which has special opening hours.

When the royal family is staying at the palace, the area, including the palace gardens and the church, is not open to the public. In recent years, the Crown Prince and Princess and their children have initiated their visit at the end of June, followed by Queen Margrethe and HRH Prince Henrik.

HRH Prince Henrik died on February 13, 2018, at the age of 83.

The castle with its beautifully landscaped castle garden is a nice stopover on the way to Sønderborg. If you have more time, you can also go for a hike in the adjacent forest. Thanks to the many paths, the length of the hike can be individually adjusted.
