The Oelbach is a right tributary of the Ruhr with a catchment area in the east of Bochum and the extreme west of Dortmund (Bövinghausen).

The Oelbach begins south of the Ümminger See at the point where the Harpener Bach and Langendreerbach flow together. However, the name Oelbachtal also includes the entire Harpener Bach valley.

As the Schattbach flows in, it absorbs more wastewater and flows past Haus Heven and finally passes through the Oelbachtal sewage treatment plant.

It used to feed two large settling ponds and then flowed into the Ruhr near Haus Blumenau. Today it still feeds three fining ponds, one of which is the Oelbach estuary pond, before it flows into Lake Kemnader at the northeastern end and thus into the Ruhr.

The Lottenbach, also called Stiepeler Bach, used to flow into the Oelbach at Blennemanns Hof, in the area of the later estuary ponds. It now flows into Lake Kemnader.

The uppermost part of the valley is protected as the Oelbachtal nature reserve and the Upper Oelbachtal nature reserve.

the Ölbach, flows past the Hellweg fortifications of the Gerther and Bövinghauser Landwehr, touches the old villages of Gerthe, Harpen, Lütgendortmund, Uemmingen, Heven and then flows into the Ruhr. He covered about 12 km.
On the way he is joined by lively fellow hikers: a spring stream from the Stemke, the Kichharpener, Kornhapener, Karolinen, Langendreer Bach as well as Schattbach and Brenscheder Bach.
