A spring with a high volume of water, but it does not provide good drinking water. Gypsum-rich red layers also ensure a very hard water quality here.

According to the legend, the source is said to be connected to the Plesse fountain.
The spring achieved national fame in the period between the end of the 18th century and the First World War, when an excursion restaurant was built here on the site of the Hasenbal paper mill: the "Mariaspring dance and student paradise". Musicians were there and the former paper mill provided drinks.
The rural areas were so well received that in the years that followed, Göttingen university circles made a large number of trips to Mariaspring. Thus, on the evening of August 12, 1801, Johann Wolfgang von Goethe stayed in a round of Göttingen professors in Mariaspring. Other famous visitors included Bismarck, Maximilian von Bayern and Duke Wilhelm von Braunschweig.
