According to legend, Charlemagne is said to have met his wife Hildegard, a Swabian, in 752 at Burg Wehrstein.

In the year 772 the places Fischingen and Empfingen are first mentioned in documents. Around 1100 the noble free of Wehrstein are called for the first time noble family, as Marquard von Wehrstein and his wife Gepa give the monastery Hirsau. At this time, the Wehrsteiner coat of arms, a golden anchor, appears for the first time. He is said to have recalled that a Wehrsteiner, who is said to have participated in a crusade with Friedrich Barbarossa, was saved during a storm at sea out of mortal danger.

The lords of Wehrstein, occur from 1101 to 1395 in a document. Their rule included next to the castle and the Hofgut Wehrstein the places Fischingen, Betra and Empfingen and was initially Palatinate TĂŒbingen, then Hohenberg and from 1381 Austrian fief.

1318 Hiltibold von Wehrstein († 1329) Abbot of St. Gallen. Probably dies the family of Wehrsteiner with the death of Benz von Wehrstein in 1409. But already in 1331 Count Rudolf von Hohenberg (1302-1336) is called as the owner of the castle Wehrstein. The Counts of Hohenberg take over the rule, which include Fischingen, Betra and Empfingen.

In 1373, the Counts of Hohenberg pledge the rule Wehrstein to the Lords of Weitingen, who continue to expand the castle in the episode. In 1381, Duke Leopold of Austria buys the entire property of the Hohenberger, to which also the rule Wehrstein belongs. Thus, Wehrstein Austrian fief, until 1806, Austria will remain lord Lord.

In 1400, the rule is pledged to Burkard von Mansperg, who has his family castle Mansberg near Kirchheim / Teck. Soon the pledge is converted into a fief. In the year 1419 the Weitinger acquire the rule back as a fief. The peasant war of 1525 survives the castle intact.

In 1528 Count Christoph von Nellenburg-Tengen acquires the Wehrstein estate. He dies in 1539 and is buried in Empfingen church.

In 1552, Jos Niklas II of Zollern bought the rule for his cousin, Count Karl I von Hohenzollern. In the Hohenzollern Erbeinigung in 1575 the rule Hohenzollern Haigerloch was slammed. After the extinction of the Zollerischen line Hohenzollern-Wehrstein / Haigerloch in 1634 Wehrstein did not come to Hohenzollern-Hechingen, but to Hohenzollern-Sigmaringen.

Until 1585, the rule was administered by a Vogt, who had his seat on the castle.

During the Thirty Years' War, the castle was almost completely destroyed in 1643 by Khurbayrian troops, but then rebuilt.

With the Peace of Pressburg in 1805, the Austrian feudal authority ended and Wehrstein completely passed into the possession of Hohenzollern-Sigmaringen. Fischingen and Betra were initially assigned to the Oberamt Glatt, which was added in 1854 to the Oberamt Haigerloch.

Around 1830, the dilapidated castle was then demolished. In 1842 major repairs were made to the ruin, and the ruin was protected from further decay by Prince Karl Anton von Hohenzollern-Sigmaringen.

In 2003, the Friends of "Wehrstein Castle Ruins" was founded, which has set itself the task of protecting the ruins from further deterioration
