The pilgrimage church of Maria Limbach (actually: Visitation of the Virgin Mary) is one of the last works of the great baroque master builder Balthasar Neumann. It was built between 1751 and 1755 on the site of an older pilgrimage chapel from the 15th century. The simple, cool exterior of the building is emphasized in the literature as an example of Neumann's age style.

The Maria Limbach pilgrimage church, located in a secluded spot near the Steigerwald forest, is an impressive testament to Balthasar Neumann's ability to create grand architecture with minimal effort. It was built as a result of a vow made by the then ruler of Würzburg: Prince-Bishop Friedrich Karl von Schönborn was cured of a hip injury through the intercession of Our Lady of Limbach and therefore vowed in 1743 to expand the Church of Grace and restore it to a presentable condition. He provided a large sum for this purpose in his will. However, this was still not quite sufficient, so the builder himself had to advance the funds.
