Although Winterberg is known to most as an important winter sports resort in North Rhine-Westphalia and the venue for World Cup races in bobsleigh and luge, the town of 12,500 residents can also look back on a long history that dates back to the 13th century. The old town with its half-timbered houses invites you to linger, and not just because of the extensive gastronomic offerings.

  • Excerpt from our hiking experience in Winterberg

    Day 6:
    The Winterberg in its summer…
    Twists go through my head.
My mind has yet to process these thoughts.
    It's summer… August 17
At Kappe, at an altitude of 776 metres, the temperature is only 10 degrees.
The firmament above Winterberg turns 50 shades of gray.
At our start we still enjoy summer melodies that swirl down in the shopping street.
Heat guns bring a warm atmosphere to the streets.
Well-dressed grandparents, with a cup of mulled wine in hand, smile at their grandchildren at the summer fair in Winterberg.
    My wife likes it…
Shovel and Go and after tens of euros lighter 'go Up to the Mountain'.
From the summer fair to the Winter fair on the Kappe, the highlight of our walk.
Along narrow forest roads to the bobsleigh track to finally arrive at the panoramic terrace. Too bad, but we were not able to enjoy beautiful views due to the dense cloud cover. That is why we have left the panorama bridge unused.
At the height of the day, here again a concentration of colorful day trippers.
Everyone wants to reach their own peak here.
A mix of helmeted mountain bikers and Nordic walkers in their best outfit bring color to this gray day in their own way.
In the wake of laughing children we start our descent via the toboggan run.
And before we knew it we were back down and it was done.
It was an experience to discover Winterberg in 'full summer'.

Triggered to other adventures during our walking week?
All our hiking experiences can be found in my Hochsauerland collection.
    Have fun watching and reading

  • The founding of the town of Winterberg is probably closely related to the construction of the monastery in Kuestelberg. Winterberg has been a town since 1270. From the 13th to the 17th century, Winterberg was even a Hanseatic town, thanks to its favorable location on the two long-distance trade routes Heidenstraße and Heerstraße. Winterberg has been a famous tourist destination for around 100 years. Above all, the numerous winter sports offers such as the bobsleigh track, ski jumps, several ski slopes or the biathlon stadium made Winterberg famous, but also in summer sports enthusiasts are offered enough opportunities thanks to the Bike-Arena Sauerland on approx. 1140 km of mountain bike trails . The adventure mountain cap with adventure bridge and summer toboggan run is particularly interesting for day trippers, as well as the numerous attractions in the surrounding area of the city.

Actually, Winterberg can only be recommended to a limited extent as a hiking highlight, because if you really want to explore the city, you have to have a lot more time and stay a few days. There is really a lot to see - yes, of course also the beautiful network of hiking trails, but also tourist highlights.

  • The history of the town of Winterberg goes back to around 1240. The city of Winterberg was probably founded together with the monastery in Kuestelberg.

At the time of the Hanseatic League (13th to 17th centuries), Winterberg was considered a Hanseatic city. The city lay at the intersection of the Heidenstrasse Cologne-Kassel and Heerstrasse Frankfurt-Soest. The poor agricultural conditions meant that trade played a central role as a source of livelihood in the life of the city.

At the beginning of the 20th century, locals introduced skiing, which soon led to a boom in winter sports in Winterberg.

During the COVID-19 pandemic in Germany, there was traffic chaos after Christmas 2020. Thousands of day tourists, mostly families, drove to Winterberg and other German ski resorts to marvel at the snow that had previously fallen in the mountains and to go tobogganing, even though the lifts and slopes were closed due to Corona. The city closed access to the parking lots. On December 27th to 30th, all parking spaces, roadsides, driveways and forest paths were parked. The day tourists came from the Märkischer Kreis, the Olpe district, the Ruhr area and partly also from the Rhineland.
