Allendale means ‘Valley of the Shining Water’ in Celtic and was probably named because of all the silver and lead ore that glistened in the streams. Allendale is famous for the Tar Bar'l New Year celebration, a festival of fire that dates back to 1858.
However, the town is a great place to visit at any time of year and has a few pubs, places for food and drink, as well as shops and accommodation. The town marks the start and finish of the Isaac’s Tea Trail, a 37-mile (60-km) hiking circuit around the North Pennine Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.
