Joan of Arc, known in German-speaking countries as "Johanna of Orleans", (1412? to 1431) was an important figure in the history of France at the time of the so-called 100-year war between the kingdoms of England and France. After her capture she was condemned as a heretic (at the instigation of the English) and burned, two and a half decades later (at the instigation of the French) the sentence was overturned. She is Patroness of France.
