Tucked away in the western end of Golden Gate Park is one of San Francisco’s most unexpected sights, a herd of American bison. They've been here since 1891, originally brought in when the species was on the brink of extinction. Over the years, the park became a key player in bison conservation, with more than 100 calves born on-site. The current herd includes descendants of bison gifted to the city in the 1980s. When their numbers dipped again in 2011, a community effort brought in new animals to keep the legacy going. The bison paddock is open to the public and stands as a quiet but powerful reminder of how urban spaces can help protect wildlife and history.
