The Gallusquelle is one of the largest sources of the Swabian Alb. It supplies water to around 40,000 people in the region. It is a karst spring. This means that it is connected to naturally developed subterranean void systems, called karst tubes, which are created by the solution of the rock. Karst springs usually spring at the edge of the Swabian Alb in deeply cut valleys.
