The memorial commemorates the commander of the 3rd US Army, General George S. Patton, who is considered a liberator of Ettelbruck and Luxembourg of Nazi Germany.
Patton is worshiped in Ettelbrück and throughout Luxembourg as a war hero, but was never himself in Ettelbrück.
