The border tower on the shore area in the district Nieder Neuendorf is one of the last existing watchtowers of the GDR in the former border section Berlin. It was built in 1987 as a command post of the Border Regiment 38 "Clara Zetkin" for 18 other border towers. After the reunification, it was preserved as a "witness of the times" and has been open to the public since November 1999.
The exhibition was completely redesigned in 2014 and now conveys multimedia-based chronological events from the end of the Second World War to the completion of German unity. The structure and everyday life of the GDR border troops as well as the internal monitoring mechanisms are exemplified by the former border guard 38. In addition, the exhibition describes the history of refugees, exiles and opposition from the region. Historical filming and a free audio guide make the visit to the bilingual exhibition a special experience.
