Here in 1953, the gold hat was accidentally found by Michael Dörner from Ezelsdorf while collecting wood as a "sheet that is a hindrance to work". The finder completely chopped the golden hat and tossed it aside. The fragmented sheet metal parts were later collected for their shimmering gold color by the worker's wife and presented to a dentist. A melt test showed that the sheet was made of solid gold.
