Memorial and museum to the pioneers who emigrated from the Eastern United States, large numbers beginning in the 1840s with wagon trains across the mountains and deserts to California. Several passes near Donner Lake were the lowest point in the Sierra Nevada into California. First the very steep Stephens Pass was used, then Roller and Cold Stream Passes were used subsequently, until the first Donner Pass Road was engineered in the 1860s.
