The Speiersgasse, together with the adjacent Kaulberg, belonged to the early settlement core of Zeil. With its numerous listed houses, it is one of the most beautiful and important side streets in the old town. Starting from the market square and over the Kaulberg, it runs in an exactly west-east direction to the Altach city wall, where only a narrow pedestrian gate has always allowed exit from the city. When most houses were built in the 17th and 18th centuries, Speiersgasse was mainly inhabited by farmers. This is indicated by the numerous gateways and large plots of land surrounded by (originally) agricultural outbuildings. Between Speiersgasse and Marktplatz is the Kaulberg, which has been characterized by a well-designed fountain since the city's 600th anniversary in 1979 (successor to the former "Speiersbrunnen").Source:
