The harbor city is the last expression of a centuries-old development in Hamburg so far: the harbor's constant shift to the west, downstream. Because the Old Elbe Tunnel blocked the passage of new container ships with great depth, Mayor Henning Vorscherau devised in 1997 a plan that was initially top secret. The harbor properties south of the Speicherstadt were to be sold to finance the construction of a new container terminal in Altenwerder. On the vacant areas could thus create a new district: the Hafencity.

It is worth a visit during the day and also at night when the reservoirs on the canals are illuminated. A canal cruise through the Speicherstadt is also recommended.
