Time seems to have stood still in the sleepy capital of the Garafía municipality. Completely isolated from everything, many have emigrated in recent decades. Of the almost 5,000 inhabitants of the municipality in 1950, only about 2,000 remain. Around 500 live in Santo Domingo de Garafía. The small village lies in the middle of an almost untouched landscape, distinctive coastal landscapes with impressive cliffs and deep ravines. It has only been connected to the road network since 1960 and the roads were only paved in the 1990s. There was also no running water supply for a long time. A small village square with a church, bars and a beautiful backdrop welcomes guests. The church is called the "Templo Parroquial de Nuestra Señora de la Luz" and was built at the beginning of the 16th century. Its ceiling is decorated in the Mudéjar style and there are some popular sculptures to admire inside.
