The complex was built by Streif von Rotenberg. Only the stair tower with its Renaissance portal and parts of the outer and moat walls remain from the original structure.

The castle in Rotenberg can be seen from afar in the Angelbach valley. The first palace complex is said to have stood around 1250. The castle was rebuilt in 1921/22 and was no longer destroyed, and the property was transferred to the state of Baden-Württemberg in 1936. At that time it served as a shelter for refugees, today it is a youth hostel of the Baden district youth ring.
