    Road cycling

Beautiful rail-to-trail route, that manages to climb gradually the rather steep Oakland hills above Montclair, half of this section is high above Shepherd Canyon road, until it merges closer, but still separate from the road. Paved, and usually wide enough to comfortably pass pedestrians. Occasional landslides show how precarious the routing was.

    Mountain biking

Montclair Railroad Trail is a 2 mile gradually climbing paved pedestrian and biking tail through Shepherd Canyon, a great off-street former rail connection to reach Skyline ridge in the Oakland Hills, either to drop east toward Moraga, or to follow the forested ridge North (toward the parks along the Berkeley Hills) or the southern ridge through Redwoods Regional Park.
