Hiking Highlight
Borsteler Switzerland, also known as Borsteler Kuhlen, is a unique landscape within the Lüneburg Heath. The loose sand was piled here by the glaciers to hills and frozen many meters down into the depths. When the glaciers were thawing in warmer phases, the water could not seep into the frozen ground, forming deep valleys. The valleys and slopes have been preserved to this day, as the very sandy soil is unsuitable for agriculture and has therefore never been cultivated.
