The patronage "Mary (or Assumption)" of this church refers to one of the many commemorative days or feast days in honor of Mary, the Mother of God. It goes back to the feast of their physical acceptance into heaven, which the Church celebrates annually on August 15th.

In many rural areas it is common for the people to collect herbal bundles (called "Kruggweusch" in the Rhenish dialect) on this day and bless them in the festival service.

In the Baroque and Rococo periods, this pilgrimage church received its impressive furnishings (first mentioned in 1413). Note the six side altars! They were created between 1765 and 1770 in the late rococo style.
