Terres Birds is a 120 hectare bird sanctuary located near the port of Callonges, north of the town (at the edge of the town of Saint-Ciers-sur-Gironde). Established in the heart of the wet meadows that border the Gironde estuary, on one of the most important migration routes in France, it is frequented by several hundred birds: little egrets, purple herons, black kites, king kites, kingfishers, shelducks belon, harriers of reeds come to nest there, to winter there or to reproduce there.
Several trails have been set up across the marshes, with explanatory panels, observation platforms and several shelters set up so that you can watch the birds in peace. Visitors pass successively from one ecosystem to another: wet meadows, lakes, reed beds or the banks of the estuary, each sheltering specific species of birds. If a ten-meter high observation tower is freely accessible, near the car park, access to the rest of the site is chargeable. The house of "La Métairie" is the "gateway" to the park: there is the ticket office, but also a tea room and a souvenir shop.
