After all, the Saale - between the confluence of the Tannbach east of Hirschberg and the confluence of the Selbitz near Blankenstein - once formed the border between the GDR and Bavaria. The former death strip on the Thuringian side is now part of the Green Belt, in which numerous rare animal and plant species have found valuable refuge.
