Location: Thornbury, South West England, England, United Kingdom
Built in 1511, Thornbury Castle is a delightful Tudor country house that was actually never used as a castle. In 1535, Henry VIII stayed at the castle with Anne Boleyn. After the Civil War, the castle fell into disrepair until being rescued in and renovated in 1824 by the affluent Howard family.
From 1966 to 1986, the castle was used as a restaurant where famous chefs such as Nigel Slater and Simon Gault began their culinary careers. Today, it is used as a luxury hotel, wedding venue and restaurant. Although pricey, it is worth stopping for a coffee to soak up the stunning surroundings.
