From the castle complex are today only parts, such as the octagonal keep, some outbuildings, remains of the walls and the cellar vault available. The keep and cellar vaults are used by the Löcknitzer tourism, home and castle club. The remains of the former castle complex, especially the outbuildings, are privately owned and not publicly accessible.

Löcknitz was often contested because of its location on an important ford of the Randow and on the border between Pomerania and Brandenburg. The castle protected the ford by the Randow.

Between 1390 and 1468, the castle and estate were owned by the Wussow family of councilors from Szczecin. From the Slavic castle Lokenitza, built of wood and stakes, a German castle with solid masonry “Castrum Locenize” was built around 1400. In 1479 Werner von der Schulenburg came into possession of the castle. After his death in 1557, Joachim von der Schulenburg had the castle complex expanded to include a mansion in the Renaissance style, located north of the castle. But the lavish lifestyle of a son led to the loss of the property. It was not until 1622 that Levin succeeded in buying back part of the Schulenburg. After the Thirty Years' War Löcknitz lay in ruins, only the fortress and castle stood, but also fell into disrepair, as the Schulenburgs were still owners but no longer lived in Löcknitz. In 1688 they lost the estate to the Electors of Brandenburg. The ruins of the keep as well as parts of the ramparts, curtain wall and casemates from the 15th century have been preserved from the castle complex. In 1985 the dilapidated mansion was blown up after 20 years of vacancy.
