    French Monument 'The Angel'

The memorial column on top of the Kemmelberg is one of the most important French monuments in the Westhoek. It reminds us of the many French who fought here in April 1918 during the Battle of the Kemmelberg.

The memorial, popularly known as 'Den Engel', is a 17 meter high column made of white cement. On the pedestal in front of the column is the statue of the goddess of victory Nike in Greek garb, with her wings spread against

both sides of the column. She holds a laurel wreath in each hand. The Greek goddess stares at the

lower mass grave and the battlefield. The sides of the obelisk bear the names of the French units that

were deployed here. This column was unveiled on September 18, 1932 in the presence of the French generals Lacapelle and Pétain. In about 1970, a lightning strike destroyed the acclaimed French helmet on top of it.

Commemorative monument for the French fallen who died on the Kemmelberg during the last German spring offensive in April 1918.
