The street name "An der Synagoge" and a commemorative plaque there commemorate the Jülich synagogue, which was desecrated by the National Socialists in 1938 and destroyed by the effects of war in 1944 (built in 1862). The oldest information about a synagogue in Jülich dates back to 1348; the first reference to Jews in the Jülich region is the Jewish privilege granted to Count Wilhelm IV of Jülich in 1226 by King Henry VII (approval of granting protection against lucrative fees); an old Jewish cemetery (used from 1816-1941) is on Aachener Strasse (B).
