Moorburg belongs since 1375 to Hamburg. It is the oldest and until 1937 the only district of Hamburg south of the Elbe. It is also one of Hamburg's oldest districts.
The Hamburgers bought the areas of Olde Moor and Reetwisch, which were located in the immediate vicinity of the Old Süderelbe, which was then the main stream of the Elbe and was preferred by the ships. They built here in 1390 a castle or a permanently occupied tower, which was named after the landscape character Moorburg, from there to control the shipping and exercise the stacking right. This meant that the merchants either had to pay customs duties for the goods on the ships or had to offer their goods for sale in Hamburg for some time. This led to a permanent dispute with the Lüneburg dukes, who resided in neighboring Harburg, and saw their rights violated. Hamburg has finally decided the dispute for themselves.

At Moorburger Kirchdeich is a monument that commemorates the defense of Moorburg at the Moorburg hill (today in the power plant) against the French troops in 1814 during the war of liberation.

The course of the old Süderelbe north of Moorburg was filled up after the storm surge in 1962 and the outflow over the Köhlbrand passed.
